Breast exam Log
Do you do monthly breast self exams and keep a breast exam log for reference? This is a
very important question because among women in the United States, breast cancer is the
most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death. Women in the
US have a 1 in 8 lifetime chance of developing invasive breast cancer and a 1 in 33 chance of
breast cancer causing their death. Because the breast is composed of identical tissues in
males and females, breast cancer also occurs in males though it is less common.
Every woman over the age of 18 should have a breast exam log. Monthly self breast exams
and yearly clinical exams are vital in early detection of breast cancer. Also being aware of the
risk factors can make you aware if you are more predisposed to the disease.
Risk factors include:
1. History of breast cancer in your family
2. Diet high in saturated fats
3. Early onset of menses or late menopause
4. Obesity
5. Alcohol use
6. Taking hormones
Improve early detection by:
a. Clinical breast exam every three years when you are
between the ages of 18 and 39 and every year from
age 40.
b. Breast self-exams every month beginning at age 18.
c. Mammogram yearly starting at the age of forty.
d. A breast exam log to record your self-exams,
mammograms and doctors appointments.
